Vattenfall and Enode bring smart charging to EV owners in Sweden

Vattenfall is one of Europe’s largest energy companies, serving millions of customers across Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK. As EV adoption accelerated across its markets, the company saw an opportunity: help customers charge smarter, not just cheaper.

The challenge

Smart charging requires reliable, real-time access to vehicle and charger data across dozens of brands. Building and maintaining those integrations in-house would take years — and would need constant upkeep as manufacturers updated their APIs. Vattenfall needed a faster path to market.

The team also had to think about the customer experience. A smart charging feature only works if customers actually connect their car. That means the connection flow needs to be fast, clear, and available for every major brand — not just the most popular ones.

“Our goal is simple: to help our customers optimize their energy usage and costs. Smart charging is a significant step forward for us, offering substantial value to our customers by focusing on their needs and enhancing their experience.”

Jonas Stenbeck, Director of Consumer Sales Nordic, Vattenfall

How Enode made it possible

By integrating with Enode, Vattenfall got access to over a thousand device models — EVs, chargers, heat pumps, and more — through a single API. The Mitt Vattenfall app could now surface real-time state of charge, schedule overnight charging to off-peak hours, and give customers a clear view of what they were spending.

Enode’s guided connection flow meant customers could link their vehicle in minutes, without needing to understand the technical details. Vattenfall could focus on the product experience rather than the integration plumbing.

50%

Largest reduction in EV charging costs for Vattenfall customers in Sweden

In the Mitt Vattenfall app, users can save up to 50% of their charging costs with smart charging.

What customers get

Vattenfall customers who connect their EV to the Mitt Vattenfall app set a target charge level and a departure time, and the app handles the rest. Charging happens when grid demand is lowest and electricity prices are cheapest — automatically, in the background.

The result is a product that delivers real, measurable value on the customer’s energy bill, and a reason to stay with Vattenfall beyond the commodity contract.
