Independent research confirms Enode's role in the residential flexibility market

A new report from independent research firm Verdantix shows how quickly the utility technology market is changing. As flexibility moves into the core of utility customer operations, the systems that manage customers increasingly need to understand the energy assets in each home, and how those assets interact with markets and the grid.

EVs, chargers, batteries, heat pumps and solar are putting more flexible assets behind the meter. For energy retailers, the opportunity is to connect those assets, coordinate how they run in each home, and shape thousands of homes into flexible capacity.

Verdantix's assessment of 14 utility customer platform providers shows where the market is heading, and where Enode stands out.

Flexibility is moving into the core

In its Smart Innovators: Utility Customer Platforms report, Verdantix maps 14 vendors across four areas that have historically been separate: CIS and billing, customer engagement, CRM, and DER and flexibility.

Those categories are starting to converge as more customers adopt flexible assets and dynamic tariffs. Verdantix finds that flexibility is becoming a core requirement of utility customer operations.

The scale of the shift is already visible. National Grid DSO reported more than 300,000 registered flexible assets in the UK as of January 2026, up 84% year over year. A European survey cited in the report identified 480 time-varying tariffs for EVs, heat pumps and batteries in 2025, roughly three times as many as in 2021.

Connectivity is the foundation

Verdantix gave Enode its highest rating, "market-leading functionality, with differentiated offering," in two areas: DER integration and device connectivity, and partner and ecosystem integration. Enode also received strong ratings for flexibility and DER orchestration, and for customer-to-grid orchestration.

We see these capabilities as parts of the same system. It starts with connecting energy assets across hundreds of brands. Those assets are then coordinated around the needs of each household. At portfolio level, thousands of homes are shaped into flexible capacity for retailers and their trading teams.

Doing this reliably takes operating experience at scale. Enode connects more than 700,000 devices across more than 150 live customers, and has managed more than 100 GWh of shiftable energy.

That scale matters when flexibility needs to become predictable. Across five live portfolios, our data shows that growing a fleet from around 50 to 5,000 assets reduced best-achievable forecast error by roughly threefold.

Building for the next grid

Verdantix finds that no single vendor leads across every capability it assessed. For energy retailers, the choice of architecture matters.

We don't think that means choosing between building everything in-house and buying a fixed solution.

Retailers should own what makes their business different: their proposition, tariffs, customer experience and market strategy. Enode provides the infrastructure underneath, from connecting assets across brands to coordinating homes and shaping flexible capacity.

Build your own optimization and flexibility logic on Enode, use ours, or combine the two. The architecture adapts to your market and how much you want to own, without rebuilding the infrastructure underneath.

Connect every asset. Coordinate every home. Shape thousands as one. That's how we're orchestrating energy for the next grid.
