NIO partners with Enode to drive user-first EV innovation

NIO, a leader in the premium smart electric vehicle (EV) sector, has been pioneering premium user experiences since 2014. NIO pairs high-performance EVs with a sophisticated digital experience that enriches users’ lives, and is constantly exploring new opportunities to unlock additional value from their vehicles.

Now, NIO has partnered with Enode to create a third-party API, so that users can connect their EV to the energy management app of their choosing. It’s a step that provides more freedom, convenience and control for users, and gives NIO a platform for continued innovation. Here’s how we’re working together – and how our partnership is changing the EV experience.

An API to empower end-users

Together, NIO and Enode have co-developed a third-party API that enables NIO users to instantly connect their EV to an ecosystem of over 100 energy management apps across 19 countries.

NIO provides its own app for vehicle management and community engagement while recognizing the value of allowing users to integrate with their preferred ecosystems for additional functionalities. By integrating their NIO EV into third-party apps, users can take advantage of a wide range of holistic home energy management services, as well as smart charging that drives down their energy consumption and costs.

Premium experience as a priority

A focus on adding clear value for users was at the heart of the partnership from the outset. NIO decided to offer the API free of charge so that the full value of sharing their EV data went to users, who own the EV and the data, rather than to themselves.

Transparency and control were a high priority. NIO users benefit from strict data protection measures, including explicit consent for data sharing, and data is packaged and safeguarded so that only the necessary information is shared with third parties.

NIO and Enode performed extensive local testing throughout the co-development process. The API was tested on NIO vehicles in Germany and Norway to ensure a premium experience, and seamless performance tailored to regional requirements.

Enode provided NIO with hands-on support at every step of the journey.
