Vattenfall and Enode bring smart charging to EV owners in Sweden

Vattenfall, one of Sweden’s largest utilities with operations across energy retail, distribution, and generation, is expanding its offering for EV owners. As part of its mission to create a fossil-free future, Vattenfall is making it easier for customers in Sweden to optimize their energy use. By focusing on user-friendly solutions, Vattenfall is helping more people transition to sustainable ways of moving, making, and living.

Now, EV owners in Sweden can access smart charging directly through the app Mitt Vattenfall, powered by Enode’s technology for EV connectivity and smart charging optimization. Users can automatically shift charging to low-price hours, cutting costs while supporting a more flexible energy system.

Accelerating EV adoption with smart charging

Sweden is experiencing rapid growth in EV adoption, driven by ambitious climate targets and strong consumer demand. The Swedish government aims to phase out fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2035 and offers financial incentives for EV owners, including subsidies covering up to 50% of home charger installation costs.

Recognizing this shift, Vattenfall saw an opportunity to enhance its offering for EV drivers. Through the Mitt Vattenfall app, customers can already track household energy use and manage billing. Now, with smart charging, they can automatically schedule charging to align with periods of lower electricity prices, helping them save while reducing pressure on the grid.

In the Mitt Vattenfall app, users can save up to 50% of their charging costs with smart charging.

Building a scalable smart charging experience

To launch this service, Vattenfall partnered with Enode to deliver a seamless and scalable smart charging experience.

Vattenfall designed the smart charging feature to be as user-friendly and valuable as possible for customers.

“Our goal is simple: to help our customers optimize their energy usage and costs,” says Jonas Stenbeck, Director of Consumer Sales Nordic at Vattenfall. “Smart charging is a significant step forward for us, offering substantial value to our customers by focusing on their needs and enhancing their experience.”

Enode’s API streamlines EV smart charging by integrating many EV brands through a single, scalable connection layer. This significantly reduces development time for Vattenfall and removes the complexity of managing multiple manufacturer integrations.

Results and next steps

Since its launch in November 2024, Vattenfall’s smart charging service has gained traction among EV owners across Sweden. By helping a significant number of customers save up to 50% on their charging costs, Vattenfall has made a notable impact.

The awareness of the Mitt Vattenfall app has increased significantly since the service was introduced. In December, Vattenfall launched a digital media campaign on smart charging, which garnered over 350,000 reactions and various forms of engagement.

Every day, Vattenfall helps hundreds of households to optimize their charging and save money with this service. Additionally, Vattenfall works diligently with feedback and insights to continuously enhance the user experience in the app.

The impact is already visible.

“Vattenfall is making smart charging effortless for its customers, and that’s what great energy experiences should be—simple, automated, and valuable,” says Thorvald Thorsnes, Chief Revenue Officer at Enode. “Seeing thousands of EV owners shift charging to lower-cost hours while improving grid flexibility is exactly the kind of impact we love to enable.”

Together, Vattenfall and Enode are exploring ways to further enhance the smart charging experience and expand the service to support more EV models and
customers.
